Yafo Creative

Sometimes I’m ahead of my time when I post about people, bands, places or things and sometimes I’m behind. Remember, I have a good reason: I had a baby 🙂 One of those spots I forgot to share with you out there is Yafo Creative.

“Yafo Creative is a guest house* and creative content center** in the heart of Jaffa — A multi-disciplinary production hub where projects are ideated and developed by our community of Israeli and international artists.”

*The house was established in 2014, and gained a fast reputation for its exclusive Friday dinners featuring some of the most
exciting local artists, who organically started performing after meals. Artists of all backgrounds – music, dance or visual art, started an interdisciplinary dialogue. The newly renovated space is nestled in a secret spot in Jaffa and offers four elegant and design rooms featuring 50-ft-high ceilings suitable for one or two guests, each with a Queen-sized handmade eucalyptus bed, local vintage furniture and changing art exhibitions. Yafo Creative offers travelers insider guidance and a unique opportunity to connect and collaborate with locals in an authentic, dynamic and inspirational spot in Israel. Room price is 90$ and more info can be found on Airbnb.

**The Yafo Creative community consists of international and local artists, tastemakers and producers, who together, bring culture to a wider audience around the world, as well as international culture to Israel through various channels, including pop-up events, monthly ‘creative dinners’, theatrical productions, exhibitions, films, music and photography. Yafo Creative develops select artists within the community through strategic channels and services — including branding, multimedia production and filmmaking — to further promote local art and spark new conversation and collaboration, crossing boundaries of genre and medium.

rotem

I recently went there to hear my friend and personal genius Rotem Bar Or (from the band The Angelcy) perform solo during an “intimate session” and luckily he played my new favorite song, untitled and unreleased; here’s a glimpse for your ears only:

Israeli Folk Dancers – Saturdays on the Tel Aviv Boardwalk

Rak be’Israel (only in Israel) can you find those weekly Saturday gatherings of Israeli folk dancers on the Tel Aviv tayelet (boardwalk). They’ve been there for years, attracting not only pure dance aficionados but passers by from around the world. So many pictures and videos taken. Have a look at this tv item broadcasted on France2 a few years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtrWXUt3NyM – at 1’43”

We shouldn’t really call them folk dancers since most of the dances and choreographies evolve with contemporary Israeli music. It started of as Israeli folk dancing, which is a dance form usually performed to music from Israel, with dances choreographed for specific songs. Most Israeli dances are performed in a circle, although there are also partner dances and line dances. For our Belgian readers interested in learning to dance Israeli Folk Dance, contact Rikske from Isradans

Personally, I find it amazing and it brings me joy and happiness to see that this is what people do on their Saturdays. Quality of life. Have a look:

Inspiration, passion & creativity…

Me&M

Working as a freelance producer you hop from one intense time job to another. When you have some time off in between (AND you finish all your other to-dos) it’s a pleasure to spend it creatively and passionately. Do you know that feeling when people just give each other great ideas and energies to go DO something creative? That’s called inspiration. I wish more people would have this kind of effect on each other and would use even their fears, demons and tears for producing positive things instead of wasting time on complaining whining & moaning. “Excelsior” – for those who’ve seen Silver Linings Playbook. Life is beautiful, we just need to see it, be grateful and embrace it, even in darkness. ‘There’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light comes in’ (L.Cohen)

M&M 4

We only needed a few minutes to throw some ideas and the girl was already filming. Shiran Pomerantz is the name and photography is her game. She likes Lana Del Rey, I like Leonard Cohen so the song choice was easily made. Black & White for the vibe. Location: my house. Shiran’s Canon 60D. She would edit it and in a few hours it was already online. We weren’t supposed to get any lighting, props, production or hair and make-up but by total coincidence some colleagues were using my back terrace for a TV-shoot so we ‘borrowed’ their hair services. While filming the intro, the Babyliss slipped out of the hairdresser’s hand and landed warmly on my shoulder. No panic, just some skin off, lots of cream, helping hands and a pretty wound. They say my skin heals fast. And then it leaves you with a little scar…

Also shared on Notes from the Road – the official Leonard Cohen road blog thank you Joey

Josephine’s Summer Essentials

With temperature rising in Antwerp it’s time to dig up the old Summer Essential’s theme. Here are some things, i can not spend any summer without:

After spending a day with my face in the sun my skin tends to feel dry and looks dehydrated. And we would not want to look like our mom’s old leather handbag, do we now? Not only is my skin easily dehydrated, it is easily irritated as well. That’s why i only use Kiehl’s. Their products are made out of the finest naturally derived ingredients so my face doesn’t turn all red from bad chemical reactions.

What’s a summer without a great read? Since free time is more or less becoming a luxury, i can really enjoy those moments when the evening sets, and i’m sitting in the garden totally losing myself in a good book.

And of course: your friends

And if you combine the last two – you’re guaranteed to have a great summer!

new single by N8n ‘Losing Control’

Did you know my brother was a pop star? You probably already by now I come from a musical family. So my brother N8n (pronounced Nathan) is an artist, a deejay, a drummer and a performer. He’s always playing somewhere around the world, from London to Capetown, from Shanghai to Tel Aviv. And in between his live gigs, he hops in and out of the studio to record his songs. This one was produced in New York. ‘Losing Control’ is the second single from his forthcoming album ‘Imaginathan’. The new single is another catchy tune with a solid hook, hear it once and it will stick in your head. The production is minimal with N8N & producer Scott Jacoby (John legends, …) bangin’ the beat, a Fender jazz bass to give it that depth, the acoustic guitar and clavinet playin’ the groove, while the the warm harmonies and 80’s synth pad take over the chorus. Lyrically N8N sings about a bad case of the ex. ‘Goin’ out of my mind – and into your Soul – It’s breaking my heart – Feels like I’m Losing Control’

The Oddword

boys

Ever seen an electro crowd doing a mosh pit? With The Oddword you can even expect the most unexpected.

Antwerp based DJ duo Boy Kortekaas and Ylli Engels are no strangers in the music industry. Boy Kortekaas started playing music when he was 15. At the age of 18, he already released his first track on the label of Dj Hell “Gigolo records”. That’s the same label where Tiga and Boys Noize began their career. A couple of years later, Boy met Ylli Engels, another great dj from Antwerp. Until then Ylli played in underground clubs in Belgium. They had such a good connection so they began “The Oddword”. In 2009 The Oddword started making music. It didn’t take long before the world started noticing them. In 2010 their first EP “Kortelas” was released on the American label Crux Records. A lot of remixes followed for artists such as Antention, Dumme Jungs, The Subs, Haezer and other great producers. In 2011 they released their second EP called “The Fire EP” on the German label Mähtrasher records. 2012 was without a doubt a fantastic year for The Oddword playing at the biggest festivals in Belgium such as Tomorrowland, Laundry Day and many more. The Oddword brings raw electronic bass music in a whirlpool of electro & techy beats. Their hyped up beats make the crowds go crazy. Not only did they conquer Belgian territory, also Miami WMC & the rest of Europe followed. Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland and France were not left unharmed.

The best experience they have had (until their feature on Marilyn & Josephine of course ;-)) was without doubt debuting in South Africa, hitting up Cape Town and Johannesburg, start of 2013.  Now the boys from The Oddword are back in the studio, working on a new EP, several remixes and some kick-ass collaborations…

Being internationally recognized does not make them love Antwerp any less. There is only one club however where they feel appreciated the most: Petrol. “There aren’t a lot of clubs in Antwerp who play our kind of music, that’s why we mostly play in clubs outside of Antwerp and Belgium. But when it comes to festivals, Belgium is a great country!” Music to the Oddword ears as they will be playing this years edition of Pukkelpop, the second largest festival in Belgium! And how about Israel? “We haven’t played in Israel yet, but we have heard it’s nightlife is better than Ibiza’s, so we wouldn’t mind being invited over? (laughs)”

theAngelcy – cry on our shoulders

Time for a musical discovery. While recently watching “Not in Tel Aviv” by Nony Geffen (full post about the film following soon) I fell in love with a song called Giant Heart by Rotem Bar Or. Rotem is a musical emperor leading a 6-headed band called theAngelcy. He started playing guitar to impress girls, so did Leonard Cohen. The band is in the starting-blocks of a promising international career. Their first single Dreamer was an unscheduled-overnight-radio-hit and with barely two years of performances throughout Israel, they have conquered our souls and acquired a devoted following.

On Tuesday, 12-02-2012, they performed at the Tel Aviv Barby for over 700 people. It was the last show before their maternity leave, the recording of their first album. On stage, Rotem knows how to interact with his audience and keep them hooked. His songs are mostly about love but his lyrics can be violent, cruel and even sadistic. Despite prophetic loneliness and emptiness, the audience feels comforted by the music. What would Freud say about the ambiguity of those figures he sings about: the motherlover, the baby boy, the fighter, the rebel angels, the big bad wolf… It was a delight to see this eclectic-folk band live on stage, they have sweet stage dynamics and a good instrumental balance. The show ended with Rotem’s solo version of a new song called ‘Secret Room’…which just left us all yearning for more…

For optimal listening experience: 1. start with Giant Heart if you feel hooked, it’s ok, you may use the repeat1 button 2. then listen to Dreamer (also on repeat1 if needed) 3. by then you’ll probably have bought the EP “Beginner’s love” and will subscribe to all their channels to stay tuned for more: Facebook Bandcamp YouTube MySpace

Josephine’s Treasure Map to Antwerp (3)

Turn up the music, fill your cup and drink it down! Part 3 is all about Antwerp nightlife. Antwerp has a lot to offer when it comes to clubbing. Here are a few of my favorite dance floors:

PETROL – Deep down an abandoned road on the South part of Antwerp lies an old industrial warehouse which is rebuild to a club with an underground vibe. Its minimal and dark interior make it a perfect location for techno parties as well as rock concerts. When i dance i “just can’t get enough”, so Petrol offers two dance floors. Usually the club is used for concerts. I once saw an excellent YACHT concert here, somewhere in 2010 – shame we don’t hear anything from these guys anymore. (Petrol – d’Herbouvillekaai 25 – 2020 Antwerp)

MAGIC – One dream, one soul, one prize, one goal: it’s a kind of magic. Freddy Mercury himself would twist and turn on this magical dance floor. Entering this club, literally under ground, feels like being warped back to the decadence of the 70ies. Electro Pop music and Eighties Kitsch in the mix with modern dance tunes, the music in Magic is as divers as its crowd: from underground artist to fashion diva. The only thing that happens in this place is dancing. On my agenda: the Filles a Papa party this Thursday! Important note: you can only get in when you’re on the guest list. Check the website for more information. (Magic – Desguinlei 94- 2018 Antwerp)

Picasa TM3-001

Click the video to see a recap of some magnificent parties going on at Magic Antwerp:

SCHELD’APEN – On the same road as Club Petrol lies an even more abandoned house, also rebuild to a (smaller) club called Scheld’apen. This place has played an important role to a lot of experimental and underground artists. The primary goal of this club is to create a platform for Antwerp artists. From time to time however, you can party hard here. I’m personally looking forward to the Mykki Blanco concert this Wednesday! (Scheld’Apen – d’Herbouvillekaai 36 – 2020 Antwerp)

ULTIMATUM – Another personal favorite are the monthly parties held in bar Ultimatum. Located in the heart of the city Ultimatum is in fact a restaurant/bar, but once a month owner Olivier turns the place upside down (and round and round) to host some of the best parties in Antwerp (and the one’s with the biggest crowd on a Sunday night – don’t these people have work on Monday?!). With names as Thirsty Thurdays and Sunday Funday – let’s be honest – you get what you came for: great music, great drinks (damn those 6 EUR gin&tonics) and great vibes. Definitely on my calendar: another Thirsty Thursday on February 28th. (Ultimatum – Grote Markt 8 – 2000 Antwerp)

(c) Scheld Apen

(c) Ultimatum

After all this dancing our feet hurt and our legs are all tired. So why not indulge yourself for a moment and sleep in one of the comfortable beds of Hotel The Black. This hotel, located in a mansion on the Antwerp Leien, feels like an old Hollywood film, not only ’cause of the colors (black and white) but also because of the glamorous yet mysterious atmosphere. Kim Soeffers, interior architect and personal friend, decorated each room as if she would live in it herself. Every room is provided with a a classic bathtub in which I for one can soak for hours. Another glass of champagne to close the night and then I lay myself to rest in a heavenly set of pillows. Aah.. this is the good life indeed. (Hotel The Black – Amerikalei 113 – 2000 Antwerp)

Music

Marilyn & Camp Cohen

Where do I start my Leonard Cohen story and how do I tell it? Needless to share the part of I’m a fan; loving his music and admiring the man. My story with LC started in my mother’s womb as my father promoted his shows in Belgium in 1974 and 1980 – my birth year. Fast forward to 2009: After working on his legendary concert in the Ramat Gan Stadium in Israel on September 24th, I was asked to join the tour in July 2010 as production assistant. When I got the call from Leonard Cohen’s tour manager, I was first of all very flattered and honoured. Of all working people they met over the years, they had chosen me. Luckily I didn’t have too much time to think, stress and prepare; we were leaving 3 weeks later. For 4 months and a half. 3 months across Europe then New Zealand, Australia, West Canada and the US. As it has now been a long time ago, some memories fade and one keeps mostly the good ones. Yes I was homesick many times. Living in a hotel, out of a suitcase and traveling is not made for everyone. Timing wasn’t good for me either for personal reasons. Being on the move all the time is not an easy thing when you are attached to your family and friends and to your comfort zone(s). But what a ‘mazal’. To see the world and to be part of the most wonderful touring company, the Unified Heart Touring Company. It’s hard work and it’s boring, it’s fast and it’s slow, it’s joy and it’s tears, it’s close and it’s far, it’s winter; it’s summer It’s all of it. All together I visited 45 different cities/countries and did over 60 shows joining the last leg of an ongoing 3 year world tour – that ended up continuing till 2013. I have visited the tour in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and kept in touch with LC until he died. So blessed to have had the privilege to work and know this man. As I said in this interview, for me Leonard Cohen was an idol that became my friend, my grandpa, my rabbi and my shrink.

Gratitude.

Collage I made a long time ago with a quote from Anthem: “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in
